May 28, 2010

First of all, I saw that the prices for the Denver Half Marathon in October would be going up after the holiday weekend. I thought about it for a day before finally signing up and committing to it. I said to myself "Well, I don't have to start training until the end of July!"

Second of all, I never thought I would ever EVER be a pacer, but last night, I was asked to pace our friend Mandy for her last segment of the Lake City 50. I'm sure after she asked, she probably thought the confusion written all over my face was because she didn't think I would actually consider doing it, but it was really because I couldn't believe SHE was asking ME, since she practically qualified for the Boston Marathon this winter without even training - that is how awesome she is. I assume she has been definitely asking everyone she knows to do it, but I was flattered that she even had the smallest inkling to ask me. So, I first - asked about the course. Most of it would be downhill, and the uphill, well, she would be on mile 40 at that point and she told me we would probably be hiking more than running. I thought, I can probably manage that. Second - I assurred her that I didn't think I would be up to her standards and wouldn't SHE be pacing ME by that point? Again, she told me she would be like a grandma at mile 40 and I would be there more for moral support and to carry her pack - GET HER TO THAT FINISH LINE!

SOOOO...this morning I looked on the website and then Garrett showed me on the map where the course is, because it goes through Vickers' Ranch! Only one uphill section of 1,700 ft elevation gain, but the rest I'm sure isn't totally bad. I actually feel pretty excited about it and went for my first training run this afternoon. I'm happy to feel excited about something again - I was feeling in a rut, probably post vacation blues! Thanks Mandy!
