Rock On! Part 1

This weekend was the Mile High Music Festival and it totally kicked ASS! It was a two day concert with five stages and over 40 artists held at Dick's Sporting Events Center in Commerce City just north of the Stapleton Redevelopment. I was so excited because I got to see a lot of my favorite musicians all at one place and pretty much at the same time. It was hard to pick and choose who I wanted to see when, but I managed to do alright :) The weather was HOT but the performances made this probably the COOLEST event I've been to.

Day 1 Highlights

After starting off with a bomb breakfast at Snooze downtown, we were off to the show. As we entered the festival, we heard a little bit if Gavin DeGraw on the Main Stage, but I was on a mission and first up for us was Jason Mraz. Earlier this year, he released a new album "We Sing We Dance We Steal Things" that I'm crazy about, so I was psyched for him to play my favorite songs off that album, plus some of his older songs like "The Remedy." I stood out there getting a sunburn (yes-I sunburn), but it was so much fun to see him. Next we wanted to see Steve Winwood, but it was WAY too hot in the direct sun, we naturally headed for shade and chilled out to some Andrew Bird in the Bison Tent. I'd never heard of him before, but I'm glad we stopped in to see what he was all about. We made our way across the recycled rubber tire field and eventually made it to the Main Stage again for O.A.R. I'd never before seen them live before, but I've heard such great things about their shows. At that point, I was wearing down and HAD to sit down to watch that show. I agree they are good, but I didn't think they lived up to all the hype - or maybe the rest of the crowd was feeling like me. Anyway, we got bored with them and went over to the stage where Spearhead was performing. I thought they were supposed to be reggae, but they sounded more pop-y reggae to me. The crowd was so much more into them, though, so it made it more fun. On Day 1, we didn't really have an agenda and anyone we absolutely HAD to see, so we ended up walking back and forth all afternoon getting a little taste of everything. We were interested in hearing Lupe Fiasco hip-hop since all we've really heard is the "Superstar" song. They were great and I think everyone was blown away by their performance.

The headliner for Day 1 was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I have to admit I was so tired by 9pm that I wasn't stoked on the show and we didn't even try to get close to the stage - I still wanted to just sit! But as soon as they hit their first note onstage - I got a second wind or something and was up and moving and dancing to their music! They had a killer performance and I loved them! They totally rocked it! Wow! And an added bonus was when Steve Winwood came out and performed with them - sweet since it was too hot to see him earlier in the day! I couldn't believe how awesome their performance was and how excellent they sounded. What a fantastic way to end Day 1!
