Chollas, Fast Food, and Wind Farms
A week ago today, Garrett and I were driving through New Mexico to Texas. We had stopped in El Rito, 50 miles north of Santa Fe for a day of climbing the day before. We were excited to be back there to try some new climbs and do some of our favorite routes again. On our road trip to Austin, New Mexico was filled ranches covered with tons of cholla plants, and we were astounded to see that some looked much bigger than us. Garrett told me to imagine falling in one of them, but I couldn't bring myself to it - ouch! For some reason, on road trips, there couldn't be anything that sounds better than fast food. We stopped at a couple Dairy Queens on the way, a Sonic, and of course a McDonalds. At the time it sounded like a good idea, but now I'm just regretting it! When we crossed the New Mexico - Texas border, we drove through what had to be the biggest wind farm in the world! Miles and miles and more miles of huge wind turbines. When we were driving through New Zealand, we stopped at a view point of the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere and this one we passed in Texas was at least 3 times as big! I couldn't really find a good source to confirm that it was the biggest, but we thought it was pretty cool. Unfortunately, we never stopped to get a photo.
